Smartphone Product Photography: Studio Results on a Budget
Today's phones are genuinely capable product cameras — if you drive them properly. For a new Meesho or Instagram seller, this setup will carry you surprisingly far.
The ₹1,500 phone studio
- White chart paper sweep — ₹60
- Thermocol/foam reflector board — ₹100
- Basic tripod with phone mount — ₹600
- Daylight LED bulb (5500K) + desk lamp you already own — ₹250
- Microfibre cloth — ₹100
That's a functioning studio for less than one dinner out.
Phone settings that matter
- Clean the lens first (seriously — it's covered in pocket oil).
- Use the main camera, never the zoom/ultrawide for products.
- Tap to focus, slide exposure down slightly.
- Turn OFF flash, turn ON grid lines.
- Shoot in the highest quality/RAW if available.
- Use the timer or volume-button shutter to avoid shake on the tripod.
Editing on the phone
Free Snapseed or Lightroom Mobile: correct white balance first, then exposure, then a small contrast bump. For marketplace white backgrounds, apps can help — but honest phone-lit whites usually need a professional edit to hit Amazon's pure-white standard.
Where the phone hits its ceiling
Reflective products (jewellery, steel, glass), pure-white marketplace backgrounds at scale, colour-critical fashion, and 50+ SKU catalogs where consistency matters. That's the point where professional shooting pays for itself in saved time and higher conversion.
Hit the ceiling?
These lessons cover what you can do yourself. When the stakes are higher — a full catalog, a brand launch, marketplace compliance — that's the work I do at my studio: Ajay Walia Photography — ecommerce shoots from Delhi NCR. Or WhatsApp directly: +91 98107 71119.
